Osmosis has been known for more than 200 years as a natural process involving fluid flow across a semi permeable membrane. A semi permeable membrane is selective in that certain components of a solution, usually the solvent, can pass through it while others, usually dissolved solids, cannot. The direction of solvent flow is determined by its chemical potential, which is a function of pressure, temperature and the concentration of dissolved solids.
